Successful start to your 2nd semester

Updated: Jan 7, 2019

We all love this time of year...some more than others. The excitement of bringing in a new year and returning back to campus marks a fresh start for most of us. Perhaps your first semester didn't go as well as you hoped or maybe it did, but for many of us, the beginning of a new year kindly presents the opportunity to make changes to your previous habits and hopefully achieve new goals you may set out for yourself.

Follow these simple steps to help you set healthy goals for this semester:

1. make the time to reflect

First and foremost, before you decide what your new years resolutions are, it's important to reflect on your previous habits and results. Go to a place that makes you feel at ease, and think about any changes you'd like to make this semester whether it be study habits, personal fitness, eating healthy, or even your sleeping schedule. Making the time to reflect on these resolutions will allow you to think about real changes you'd like to make and hopefully inspire yourself to make them.

2. set realistic goals for yourself

Now, having said that we all appreciate setting some new goals for the new year, make sure these goals are actually attainable. It may help to start with something small and build up to your ideal goal with time. Don't overwhelm yourself with something big right away. Be kind to yourself. You'll appreciate it in the long run.

3. try something new

While this point doesn't necessarily have to do with an overall goal, encourage yourself to step outside of your comfort zone and try something new! As I mentioned before, the start of a new year marks a fresh start for most of us, so now is the perfect time to do something you never thought you would. Who knows, you may end up loving it!

4. monitor how you're doing

Make the time to look back on the initial goals you set and monitor your progress. Even if you've made the slightest changes, that's great. If you're noticing you're heading in another direction, reflect on what you can do to steer yourself the right way.

5. make time for yourself

While new years resolutions and goal setting can have meaningful impacts, it is ultimately most important to make time for yourself. Make time to be with friends. Make time to do the things you love. Make time for yourself. Do not be ashamed to do things differently from others, that's what makes you you!
